
Baby clams, like other kinds of seafood such as crabs, shrimps, razor clams, etc, can be cooked with tamarind water (made from tamarind pulp stirred in water) into palatable dishes.
Tamarind pods, or pulps, are used quite popularly in many Vietnamese food. They add sour taste to sour soups, and add sweet-sour taste to stir-fried foods. Other sour fruits can be used to bring in the sourness to the food too, but tamarinds are always preferred in sweet-sour dishes.
This particular dish is easy to cook. Just a small notice that we cook the whole live baby clams, so make sure we wash them very well before cooking.

Live crab is not very cheap, the bigger the crab, the more expensive it is. We often cannot afford buying the big ones, but for two persons, a big crab is sometimes too much and too heavy for a meal. This time, the crab I cooked was a small one.
In Vietnam, crab can be cooked in many ways. This crab in tamarid sauce is one of the most popular and most favored by lots of people. The dish is listed at almost every eating house or restaurant near the beaches and at seafood restaurants in the mainland. It is quite easy to make this dish though.
Tamarind pulp is used quite popularly in Asian cuisine. The green ones can be cooked directly with foods in the sour dishes, and the pulps of mature pods are often packed in small packages to be sold at markets or supermarkets, which makes it very convenient for cooks. I love it for the sourness with special smell and taste.

I was very curious about the name of this egg salad. When reading Western cookbooks, I have been familiar with the name of the dishes indicating who makes them such as mother’s chicken soup, grandmother’s apple pie, etc. But this is the first time I read about a dish by a son-in-law. "What an interesting name given to this dish", I thought.
So I decided to make this salad. It is quite simple. I like cooking with tamarind paste and this is always my favorite flavor. Personally I think this dish has more typical Asian flavors. After the first trial, i definitely had to admit that I liked the taste and flavor so so much. I immediately told my fiance that he ought to make this salad for my parents one day and surely he would get good praise.
In several friends’ gatherings, I re-made this salad and it was always welcomed by my friends and was the one to be finished first and very quickly. It really worths a try.
